The Andrew “Dewey” McCarthy ’81 Story Andrew “Dewey” McCarthy, a Boston native, former Blue Streak soccer player and beloved 1981 graduate of John Carroll University passed away on October 18, 1983 following an automobile accident while on a work trip in Detroit. Dewey founded the John Carroll Alumni Soccer Game in 1982 and following his death, the game was named in his honor.

With the goal of turning a tragedy into a positive legacy, the Andrew McCarthy Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Dewey’s family, friends, teammates, classmates and co-workers. Since 1983, money has been raised in support of the scholarship and today, the fund is fully endowed. The scholarship has been awarded annually since 1988 with members of the McCarthy family in attendance at each alumni game to meet the current recipient since the scholarship’s inception. Highlights of the event include mass, a lunch/dinner buffet, scholarship presentation and the annual alumni soccer game.

In 2016, the event returned to Boston for a special gathering in Dewey’s home town. The 2012 McCarthy Alumni Soccer game marked the 30th anniversary of the event and in addition to Dewey’s sister (Theresa) and brother (Patrick), Dewey’s two nieces made the trip to Cleveland for the first time.  A two-day celebration prompted the following letter from Julia (age 16) to the uncle she never knew.  Read Julia’s Letter
