Students Who Are Symptomatic

Students experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms (fever/chill, cough, congestion, sore throat, any aches, fatigue, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea and /or loss of taste or smell) no matter how mild, should notify Student Health Center at 216.397.4349 for guidance. They should stay in their location—or not go anywhere else on campus—if they have any symptoms of infection.

John Carroll University Student Health Center is committed to protecting and promoting the health, wellness and safety of our campus community. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Student Health Center is accepting walk-ins and scheduled appointments for in-person nurse and physician visits. It is important that we follow the guidelines established by the CDC and the State of Ohio including the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.  We support frequent hand washing and optional face masking when visiting the health center. COVID-19 Vaccination

John Carroll University Highly recommends the COVID-19 vaccination for all students and employees.  Although the Student Health Center does not offer the COVID-19 Vaccine, they can help facilitate and transport you to receive the vaccine locally, near campus.  Please call the health center with questions or if you need transportation to the local site.

Where is the Student Health Center located?

The Student Health Center is located in the lower level of Murphy Hall.

When is the Student Health Center open?

The Health Center is open during the academic school year on the following schedule:

Clinic Hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Physician’s Hours: Monday and Thursday, 1 p.m. - 4:45p.m.

What type of services are available?

Experienced registered nurses are available for illness and injury clinic care. Physicians are on site Mondays and Thursdays, 1 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., during the academic school year. Hospitals (including pediatric ER) and urgent cares are also located nearby, and referrals may be made when physicians are not on campus.

Services also include: lab/blood work, allergy injections, TB testing, immunizations, women's clinic, STI testing, travel clinic, massage therapy, along with health-wellness literature and seasonal flu clinic.

What are the charges for the Student Health Center?

Most Health Center care is offered without charge. There is a charge for physician visits, lab work, physicals, and equipment loaned but not returned. Charges are added to the student's account; physician visits are billed through their office (Cleveland Clinic). Each student is responsible for knowing their own insurance coverage for network physicians and medical facilities.

What about Student Insurance?

The University does not offer student health insurance, although information about purchasing coverage is available.  Please email or call the health center for information.

You are required to submit a copy of your health insurance coverage, including insurance company name with billing address, group number and policy holder's name with their date of birth, to the Student Health Center for our files.

Does the Health Center offer any transportation services to facilities located off campus?

The Student Health Center has a medical van available to transport students to medical appointments, free of charge, within a five mile radius of our University. The hours of transport are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule transportation please call 216.397.4349.

How are emergencies handled?

A rescue squad is available for victims of major accidents or life threatening emergencies (dial 911). The ambulance will usually transport you to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. You are reminded that an emergency room is NOT to be used as a doctor’s office. If you are unsure about what to do, contact the Health Center for advice and counsel. If the Health Center is closed, contact JCU EMS (through the JCU PD, 216.397.1234) or your R.A.

Does the Health Center provide class excuses?

Individual faculty members determine attendance policies. When you must be absent from class for medical reasons, it is your responsibility to inform your faculty members. Upon request, the Health Center will give a written note, validating the date you were seen in our clinic. This is not an excuse for missing class. This policy is in accordance with the HIPAA guidelines, which protects the privacy rights of each student.

If you are hospitalized or ill, or will miss several days of class, please contact the Student Health Center, the Office of Academic Advising or the Boler College Dean's Office, and they will guide you in ways to communicate the absence with your faculty. After you are released from the hospital, you will be asked to provide medical documentation.

Is a visit to the Health Center kept confidential?

Records of all visits to the Health Center are STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Information about the nature of illnesses is NOT given to anyone (including faculty, administration, and family) without the permission of the student. In the event of a serious illness or accident, the health center will notify your parents/guardians of the situation, when your prior consent has been given (18 years or older).

The Student Health Center provides access to the following clinics and programs:

Women’s Wellness Clinic

A Women’s Wellness Clinic is offered once a month. The health practitioner examines students with gynecological concerns, performs breast exams, routine PAP testing, and all STD testing.  For questions or to make an appointment, please call the Student Health Center at 216.397.4349.

Travel Clinic

The Student Health  Center can offer Travel Clinic options for international travel. The health practitioner instructs students on the health implications they may face when traveling to the out-of-the-country areas, prior to receiving the vaccinations. There is a cost for the clinic and vaccinations.

Nutrition Program

There is a Nutrition program offered twice a month with a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Nutritionist. The Nutritionist will see students with eating and nutritional concerns. Students can make an appointment by calling the Student Health and Wellness Center at 216.397.4349. There is no fee for this service.

Wellness Fair

The Wellness Fair is held in the Atrium of the Student Center annually for the entire JCU community. All of the wellness presenters are free to participants. There is cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar screening, massage therapy, skin care, dental hygiene, nutritionist with healthy food snacks, Podiatric foot evaluations, sleep center, area fitness centers, and wellness information from our community and on-campus organizations available to all attendees.

 

Free, Confidential STI Clinic

The Health Center will test for gonorrhea and chlamydia (no blood taken). This testing is confidential and free.

TB Testing

Testing for tuberculosis is available at the health center for a charge. TB testing is done weekdays, except Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Physicians from the Cleveland Clinic Health System staff the Health Center on Monday and Thursday afternoons during the academic school year.  Janet Morgan M.D., Lauren Smit D.O., Steven Turoczi M.D. and Neha Vyas M.D. are the physicians at the health center.

The Nutritionist is Shannon Stovsky R.D., L.D.

The Women's Wellness Physician is Laura Lipold, M.D., Cleveland Clinic Health System.

Student Health Form Required to be completed by all students (undergraduate and graduate) prior to entering the University. The online forms includes emergency phone numbers and insurance information, medical history, an immunization record and a TB screening questionnaire.
