How do we accompany LGBTQ+ students?

Join other Catholic school teachers and staff members to discuss, openly and honestly, some of today’s complex issues surrounding gender and sexuality. These issues are not new, but newly prominent in our schools. A team of JCU faculty with expertise in counseling, sociology, theology, and education will provide context and insights from diverse perspectives in order to invite reflection on ways we can love, care for, and challenge our students.

Free and open to all Catholic school parents, teachers, and staff. Registration required.

Workshop 1: Wellness

Wednesday, March 20, 4:00-5:30pm

How can we care for the emotional, mental, bodily, and spiritual health of our students? What are the risks faced by LGBTQ+ youth? What are the different approaches to wellness recommended by counselors and other mental health professionals?

Workshop 2: Identity Development

Wednesday, April 10, 4:00-5:30pm 

How is the construction of identity both an individual and communal task? How does socialization impact the development of personal identity? How do we understand the Catholic identity of our schools in the context of an increasingly diverse society and student body?

Workshop 3: Accompaniment

Wednesday, April 24, 4:00-5:30pm

What are the ways we walk with our students? What are appropriate responses? When is intervention necessary? What resources are available? How can we cultivate a culture of accompaniment in our schools?

Panelists

The following JCU faculty, with expertise in different disciplines, will together facilitate all three workshops:

Dr. Medora W. Barnes is Professor and Chair of the Sociology and Criminology Department at John Carroll University. Her research examines work‐family decisions during the transition to parenthood, gender during the transition to adulthood, as well as a variety of topics around marriage, pregnancy, and partnership.

Dr. Edward Hahnenberg is the Breen Chair in Catholic Theology and the Chair of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at John Carroll University. A past delegate to the U.S. Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue and former theological consultant to the U.S. Bishops’ Subcommittee on Lay Ministry, his research explores theologies of church, ministry, vocation, the Second Vatican Council, and Catholic higher education.

Dr. Joe Krivos holds degrees in Theology, Philosophy, and Counseling Education. He teaches a wide array of graduate-level courses as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at John Carroll Univeristy. Joe is clinically active in private practice working with clients to address complex trauma, identity development, and LGBTQ+ topics in counseling. 

Dr. Dan Reynolds is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Education at John Carroll University. He is a former Catholic high school English teacher and Dean of Students in Louisiana, Texas, and Tennessee. His research focuses on adolescent literacy teaching, learning, and teacher education, and he teaches courses in literacy education and teacher education.
