Each year, the Department of Counseling honors a graduate of the program who exemplifies:

These are qualities that Dr. Faiver championed during his tenure in the Department. In recognizing student excellence, we honor the contributions of Dr. Faiver to the Department, the University, and the field of counseling.

The Beta Chi Scholarship is administered by Beta Chi, the John Carroll University chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the national counseling honor society. The Beta Chi Scholarship is awarded annually, as funds are available, to 1-2 members of the Beta Chi Chapter during the spring semester of each academic year.
The total amount given to the award recipient(s) is $300-$900, depending on the number of award recipients. The scholarship funds requests from current members of Beta Chi for support for activities that will enhance their professional development. Applicants are selected based on their contributions to the counseling field, scholarship, professionalism, and contributions to the chapter, as applicable. The funds should be used for a specific goal that will enhance the individual’s professional development and make a contribution to the field of counseling.
By accepting the scholarship, the recipient agrees to submit a report to the Beta Chi faculty advisor within two months of completing the sponsored activity and to give a presentation to the John Carroll Beta Chi Chapter in the semester after the activity. Finally, the recipient agrees to serve as a reviewer of applications for the scholarship for two years. Scholarship applicants must be a member of Beta Chi at the time of application. The scholarship awards will be announced at the spring induction ceremony.

Scholarships and fellowships are available for master’s- and doctoral-level counseling students who are committed to serving minority, rural, or military populations after graduation. Award amounts range from $8,000 to $20,000, and all awardees also receive a sustainability package that includes access to mentors, professional resources, and much more.
Congratulations to JCU Counseling students, Carmen Hall-Shorts, Sarah Billingsley, and Sydney Kent, for receiving the 2018 NBCC Foundation MFP Counseling Fellowship. These fellows received funding (up to $11,000 each) and training to support their education and facilitation of their addictions counseling services to underserved minority transition-age youth (ages-25). This award was given at the 2018 NBCC Foundation Bridging the Gap Symposium: Eliminating Mental Health Disparities in Reston, Virginia.
