The Celebration of Service Program is a truly cutting-edge program for military veterans seeking an education at a top university. We believe our nation’s veterans deserve nothing less!

  •  Yellow Ribbon participation: We voluntarily participate 100% in the VA’s Yellow Ribbon program, and our Patriot Award makes a John Carroll education tuition-free for veterans who are 100% eligible under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
  • Your military training will be reviewed for transfer of academic credit, thus reducing your coursework requirements for your degree. At a minimum, you will receive 6 credit hours of general elective credit through our Military Science department. These particular credits can also be counted towards the JCU Leadership Minor.
  • One-stop support– there’s no need to run around campus to different offices with questions. Our Office of Veterans Affairs is your one-stop shop for questions or problem solving throughout your entire time at John Carroll.
  • Discounted apartment housing is available, with all utilities (gas, water, sewer, electric, cable, Internet) provided in residential 2-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom properties just outside of campus for only $850/month. Use part of your VA monthly housing allowance, and keep the rest for other needs.
  • Veterans welcome session and orientation– this session for student veterans gives you important information about starting your academic career, and linking you with important resources including a local representative from the VA.
  • Exemptions from certain freshman class requirements are possible for those who have served at least one full tour and who have at least one OCONUS deployment.
  • Transition Class– exclusively designed for non-traditional student veterans, this class  will give you practical tools to be a successful student veteran, help you decide what majors or careers you might pursue, and network you with your peers.
  • Online Certification of benefits– allows for a streamlined application of your military education benefits, eliminating the need to have paperwork signed at various offices around campus. We’ll take care of the administrative end of your education.
  • Course load change counseling– if your schedule necessitates a change in course load, we provide proactive counseling to ensure that you understand the intricate VA education policies, and avoid unexpected financial complications.
  • Team Leader- during your first semester here, your Team Leader will meet with you regularly to provide peer mentorship and assist in your transition to campus.
  • Veterans Group-we have a very active and supportive group of student veterans who regularly organize social outings, campus events to benefit Wounded Warrior Project, as well as participate in the continued development of the Celebration of Service Program. Above all else, they are your direct peer support.
  • Veterans Lounge– the lounge allows you to socialize with your peers, hang out between classes, or do homework in a veteran-only environment.
  • Student Veteran Transition Advising  is in place to assist you in the transition from the military to academics to your future career. It also includes workshops for Personal Financial Planning, Networking, and translation of military skills for a resume.
  • Online Networking–Uvize is a brand new platform to connect you with a wide network of fellow student veterans for mentorship, information exchange, and networking.
  • Veteran Friendly Internship and Career Partners– We are partnering with a variety of employers in the Cleveland-metropolitan area to provide internships specifically for student veterans (many of them paid), and linking our students with veteran friendly employers.
  • A commuter meal plan is provided at no cost to Yellow Ribbon veterans.
  • Independent study options are available as needed, providing you with flexibility in course scheduling and in maintaining full-time status when life issues arise.
  • Veteran Friendly curriculum-several professors have designed classes specifically with veterans in mind.  One of the most popular offerings this past semester was a Political Science class focusing on global security and counterinsurgency efforts.
  • Veteran Alumni Networking and Support– provides students with the opportunity to connect with our extensive network of alumni veterans including General Carter Ham, a retired 4-star general and graduate of our top rated ROTC program.
