The newest feature of sustainable living at John Carroll University, JCU Clothes Closet, where community members can shop for donated clothes and accessories, will have its grand opening by Thanksgiving. The JCU Clothes Closet will be located in the basement of the Graselli Library, with hours of operation being Tuesdays and Thursday from 7-10PM.

The JCU Closet was started by Junior Maggie Hutchinson. An Economics major with a history of service at JCU, Maggie was one of three recipients of the George B. Sweeney Endowed Campion Award for Service, or the Campion Award. The Award grants the recipients $500 to fund an on-campus service initiative. Maggie used her funding to start the thrift-store inspired JCU Clothes Closet.

The Clothes Closet is donation-based, with John Carroll students and neighboring community donating clothing items. Once open, the Clothes Closet will act as a clothing-exchange thrift store. Customers can shop through donated clothes. The Clothes Closet is exchange-based, so items of equivalent value are exchanged. Currently, the shop exchanges clothing, accessories, and some small other items, though Hutchinson hopes to eventually expand to include electronics or furniture.

While the grand opening is still tentative, details on the location and grand opening are soon to come, so keep your eyes peeled for news on this great JCU Service & Sustainability initiative!

The Sustainability Committee and Campus Ministry are co-sponsoring an important national climate change education event, a nationwide screening of the Academy Award nominated documentarySun Come Up on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Donohue Auditorium. The event is being held in conjunction with the Feast of Saint Francis, who was named patron saint of those who promote ecology by Blessed Pope John Paul II.

The film depicts some of the world’s first “forced climate migrants,” inhabitants of the Carteret Islands just north of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. The Catholic Church has been instrumental in helping to relocate these “environmental refugees.”

After the film, there will be a discussion about the film and action steps that viewers can take to respond to the unfolding climate perspective based on authentic Catholic teaching.

For more information, contact sustainability@jcu.edu or visit the Catholic Climate Covenant website.
