While pursuing a major in the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, you are required to take a course in each of the areas of the major to reinforce the integration of communication principles in different media and situations. The areas you will learn about include radio and television, film, multi-media, journalism, public relations and organizational communication, rhetoric, public address, speech science, theatre, and performance.

Students may follow a General Communication Track or may choose to specialize in one of five other tracks, including Integrated Marketing Communication [Public Relations], Journalism, Persuasive and Relational Communication, Theatre, Visual Media.

Each of these courses addresses the process of how people use messages to share understanding, opinion, make commitments, and recognize the implications of commitments. Every student in the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts should be able to communicate effectively through a variety of perspectives rather than only one. In an alumni survey, 40% of the respondents felt the breadth of the Communication and Theatre Arts major was the most valuable aspect of the major.
