For this year’s Tim Russert Photography Contest, we are looking for original photographs that depict the experience of community.  Is it sharing jokes over dinner at Schott Dining Hall or yawning over pre-class bagels at Einstein’s?  Is it making pep banners to cheer the athletic teams or students collaborating on an all-night cram?  Is it capturing classmates in the act of a one-time service project or dorm mates digging in to a care package from home?

In study, in sport, in meals, in service, in worship:  Show us the vibrant campus connections of John Carroll University.

Photo Contest Guidelines

Each photo should include a caption and approximately a 150 word explanation of how the photo captures the theme.

Photos will be displayed in the O’Malley Center Atrium the last two weeks of the semester. Then, will be displayed in the Tully Atrium of the Library during the last two weeks of May and the month of June.

Winning photos will be permanently displayed in the Russert Department and on our website. Submission process includes an online submission of a jpeg file and a print copy.

Entry Form and Submission:

1.         ONE entry form must be submitted per photograph

2.         SUBMIT up to 3 different photographs

3.         COMPLETE all questions on your form

4.         ATTACH an entry form to the back of each print photo

5.         INCLUDE a jpeg file submission on line

6.         PLACE submission(s) in a protective envelope and deliver it to the Photo Contest Box in Communication Department Office Room OC 47 by 5 p.m. April 9.

INCOMPLETE forms or entries result in ineligibility for contest


All submissions must be a 5 X 7 full frame (no borders) photo print; not smaller or larger, and one medium or high resolution jpeg of the same printed image (300 dpi or 6mb). No WEB resolution please. Photos taken from a smart phone may be submitted as long as the resolution is 300 dpi. Both formats (print and electronic) must be submitted. Images must be submitted as prints to be judged and exhibited.  Digital files must be submitted on line.  A digital file without a print will not be judged. Remember, a form must also accompany each submission. Local photo labs can print and make the jpeg file for you.

For students using cell phones, images should be recorded on highest file size available to meet above measures. Then, 1) Email image to an email address where the file can be downloaded onto a computer. 2) Download image onto computer or storage drive such as a memory stick or burn a CD. 3) Email or deliver stored file to a photo lab and order print 4) or print image on a quality printer.


The contest is open to all JCU students currently registered. First, second and third prizes include Sony or Fuji digital cameras, supplied by Van’s Photo in Mentor. Three Honorary Mentions will also be awarded. All photographs must be original and taken by a JCU student. It is the responsibility of the entrant to obtain the appropriate permissions from all concerned parties.

A special category is open to all JCU Faculty and Staff. No prizes are given in this category, but photos will be displayed with the student photos.

The Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts assumes all entries are original and the property of the entrant. A submission of entry acknowledges acceptance of these rules. Materials may not be returned.

Winners will be notified by email by April 21 if their work has won. A ceremony and display will open April 24, in the O’Malley Center Atrium at 5:00pm.  Winners are expected to attend; all entrants are invited.
