THE RUSSERT FALL CRAWL: 25 STUDENTS, 2 PROFESSORS, 1 BUS DRIVER & 4 FANTASTIC STOPS.
We left campus at 8:00 a.m. the Friday of Fall Break, and headed downtown for a sweep of communication “shops” to see how things work in the real world. First Stop: Goldfarb Weber Creative, the digital production house that did that great Cavs video everyone’s seen. “In communications, you’re in the business of storytelling,” said Ron Goldfarb, President & Creative Director. “Stay curious!”
Our next visit was The Adcom Group, where Lauren McPherson ’14, Assistant Account Executive, was our top-notch tour guide. As Chloe Slavin ’18 said, “Lauren gave some great advice, such as getting Hubspot certification. And she told us to read everything we can get our hands on.” Point taken!
From there we visited Brandmuscle, where we met up with another Russert alumnae, Kara Alloco ’13, who has been with the company since graduation. We were lucky to hear from Phil Alexander, CEO, in town from Chicago headquarters. His advice: “be indispensable” at work, willing and able to do whatever it takes, learning along the way. Last but nowhere least was the stop at WKYC TV-3, where Terry Moir, Program Director, spent an hour with us touring the station, talking about “iterative reporting”, “multi-platform journalism”, and “social listening”, and discussing opportunities as digital writers and content producers. “Intern, intern, intern” she said. As did everyone we met. “I really felt inspired and able to visualize opportunities ahead, ” said Emily Mastroianni ’17. A morning well spent!
