Carroll News Receives 9 Awards

The Carroll News was named the second best non-daily college newspaper in the region of Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan by the Society of Professional Journalists.

John Carroll University students swept the general column writing awards:
1st place: Brian Bayer, “The Bayer Necessities”
2nd place: Clara Richter, “Off the Richter”
3rd place: Dan Cooney, “Cooney Meets World”
Brian will move on to the national competition.

In the category of in-depth reporting:
2nd place: Spencer German and Zach Mentz for their story about what JCU can learn from the Penn State/ Jerry Sandusky scandal
3rd place: Brian Bayer and Ryllie Danylko for their series of stories on the contraception and helth care coverage debate reaching JCU

In the category of sports writing:
2nd place: Zach Mentz for his story on Tom Arth being named the new JCU football coach

In the category of general news:
2nd place: Dan Cooney for his story on CSS seeking permission to carry guns

In the category of feature writing:
2nd place: Dan Cooney for his two-part interview with Father Niehoff last spring
