JCU Debate won the Liberty University Debate Championship this weekend [Nov. 2-4] in Lynchburg, VA.
In the novice division, Jeremy Himmelright & Chris Mitschow won the tournament, defeating the previously undefeated team from George Mason University in the final round, on a unanimous decision of the three judges. It was the second final round and first championship for the team. The JCU team of Bridgette Mendes and Drew Dockery placed 5th at the tournament, earned the 4th seed in the preliminaries, but fell to GMU in the quarterfinals. It was Bridgette & Drew’s highest finish of the year, but the 3rd time they’ve finished in the top 10 this semester. Both teams were 4-2 in the preliminaries, and Jeremy & Chris finished the weekend 8-2, while Bridgette & Drew ended it 5-3. Individually, Chris placed 4th, Drew 5th, and Jeremy 9th in the 48-debater field.
In the varsity division, Emily Stolfer & Noel Massarelli had another competitive tournament, although they did not win any awards. The team leaves Friday for Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where Emily & Noel will compete at Wake Forest, while the others will compete at a tournament hosted by Appalachian State University.
