A rich aspect of the Jesuit tradition is to inaugurate each academic year with a “Mass of the Holy Spirit,” an occasion for convening the community for the purpose of a shared, spiritual celebration of the challenging semesters ahead. This celebration takes place at Jesuit high school, college and university campuses across the United States, as well as at numerous other Catholic and Jesuit educational institutions world-wide. While the John Carroll community represents many faith traditions, this celebration unites us in one communal quest for the gift of wisdom and compassion for our faculty, staff and students.
This tradition is enriched at John Carroll by making the time of the Mass convenient and by adding a luncheon to the celebration following the liturgy. “Celebrate the Spirit” will occur at noon on Tuesday, September 9th. Mass will be in Gesu Church, located on Miramar Blvd., across from Rodman Hall. The luncheon will be served from the Schott Dining hall with seating in the dining hall, the Underground, the Inn-Between and upstairs in the LSC Conference Room and Murphy Room.
This year the mass will be immediately followed by a ribbon cutting and blessing for Murphy Hall.
Students, staff, faculty and administrators are invited to participate. I ask department chairs and/or secretaries to distribute copies of this memo to part-time lecturers and others who may not receive it. While no classes that day will be canceled, the schedule will be abbreviated so as to create a free period lasting from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. No classes or labs are to be held during that two-and-a-half-hour period.
The most common class adjustments appear below. If your class falls outside of these meeting times, please see the attached schedule.
