Minor in Professional Healthcare Preparation Program Curricular Requirements:

The minor will require 7 courses (18 hours): one from each of the 7 categories.  Students must complete two requirements (1&2) in the experiential coursework.

Certificate in Professional Healthcare Preparation Program Curricular Requirements:

The certificate program will consist of 5 courses (12 credit hours).  Students must take course A and B.  Students then choose 3 more three-credit courses from any of the remaining categories. Of those three courses two must come from different categories. Students meet the experiential requirement through #1, shadowing.

Required Courses:

A. Survey of Healthcare Professions (1 credit)

B. Introduction to Health Care: The Contect of Care-giving (2 credits)

C. Understanding the Patient (3 credits)
Students may choose one of the following courses:

  • “Healers, Patients, and Cultural Competence”
  • Culture, Environment, and Global Health
  • Health Psychology
  • Biomedical Humanities

D. The Ethics of Care

E. Communication in Healthcare Settings (3 credits)
Students may choose one of the following courses:

  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Healthcare Communications
  • Advanced Writing: Medical Science Writing

F. Managing Healthcare (3 credits)

G. Elective Courses (3 credits)
Students may choose one of the following courses:

  • Public Health in the U.S. Society
  • Family Violence
  • Aging, Health, and Society
  • Sociology of Death and Dying
  • Sexuality and Sexual Behavior
  • Poverty, Welfare and Social Justice in the U.S.
  • Poverty and Disease
  • Epidemiology
  • Drugs and Behavior
  • Eating Disorders
  • Psychology of Autism
  • Psychopharmacology

Experiential Requirements:

1. Shadowing

Students must spend a minimum of 40 hours shadowing no less than two healthcare providers (0 credit)

2. Students studying for a minor must participate in one of the following activities:

  • Research at external site or at JCU with faculty member
  • Internship at approved site.
  • Participation in medical immersion trip sponsored by JCU or other approved sponsor.
  • Participation in Summer Field Experience.
  • Service Learning related to health arranged via Center for Service and Social Action (must be a full semester)
