Legal Studies

Explore the concept of justice and the legal structures that protect it with courses that contextualize the interplay of law and society within historical, theoretical, and case-based studies. This concentration will prepare you for law school, advanced study in the humanities, or a career in the legal field.

What Will You Study?

Majors in this concentration will acquire a strong foundational knowledge of how American courts—both at a state and federal level—impact the political process, the law, and society. Majors will also study historical legal achievements and the ongoing legal deficiencies that prevent justice from engendering social parity.

The first required course is Judicial Politics. Students must then choose a case-based course from the following: Civil Rights and Liberties, Communication Theory, or American Constitutional Development Pre-1865.

Electives for this concentration include Wrongful Convictions; Philosophy of Law; The U.S. Supreme Court; Criminal Justice Systems; and International Institutions, Law, and Human Rights.
