Colleges and universities promote high levels of student achievement by emphasizing the importance of academic effort and setting high expectations for student performance. Indicators include the amount of time students report spending on academic tasks and developmental emphases of coursework (i.e., analysis, synthesis, judgment, application).

Reported levels of academic challenge have risen for both first-year and senior students at JCU since 2005. JCU also compares favorably on this benchmark to other NSSE institutions, including Jesuit and master’s colleges and universities.
