John Carroll University Announces Inaugural ‘Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology:’ Dr. Edward P. Hahnenberg

DrEdward P. Hahnenberg, Ph.D., has been named as the inaugural holder of the Jack and Mary Jane Breen Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology at John Carroll University. Hahnenberg currently serves as associate professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he teaches courses in theological method, ecclesiology, liturgy, and contemporary Catholicism. He will join John Carroll’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies in the fall of 2011.

In announcing the appointment, John Carroll University President Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., said “Dr. Hahnenberg is a scholar held in the highest regard among his peers, nationally and internationally.” He added, “Our students stand to benefit greatly from Dr. Hahnenberg’s research and insight, helping them to better understand the integration of Catholic theology with a commitment to faith, social justice, and scholarship.”

The Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies and the Tuohy Chair in Interreligious Studies are already established at John Carroll. The addition of the Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology further strengthens the University’s mission to educate individuals of intellect and character who can lead and serve in the region and the world.

Hahnenberg has authored three books – Ministries: A Relational Approach (Crossroad, 2003), A Concise Guide to the Documents of Vatican II (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2007), Awakening Vocation: A Theology of Christian Call (Liturgical Press, 2010)—and numerous articles in academic and pastoral journals. He served as a consultant to the U.S. Bishop’s Subcommittee on Lay Ministry in its preparation of the document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord. He also will continue to sustain connections with theological communities both regionally and worldwide.

He earned both his B.A. and his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame. A native of Michigan, Hahnenberg is married and has three children.
