In memoriam

A model alumnus
Bruce Thompson ’43 was the only alum to receive four alumni awards – the 1999 Alumni Medal, the 2002 Silver Quill, and the Alumni Volunteer Service Award (1994 and 2008). Dedicating himself to the advancement of the University, the former president of the Glee Club (1942) chaired his class’ 50th and 55th reunion committees, worked on national alumni association committees, chaired reunion golf outings, and served as table captain for his class at alumni Mass and breakfasts. The World War II veteran, who conducted naval operations in New Guinea and the Philippines, enjoyed a successful, 46-year career in advertising sales. The Cleveland Heights native was married to his wife, Mary Ruth Miller, for more than half a century and raised four children. The former altar boy was part of several Catholic organizations including the Serra Club. He proudly paid every penny of his way through John Carroll.

The good doctor
Fr. George Murray ’53, S.J., M.D., was an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the director of the Psychiatric Fellowship Program at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. The Cleveland St. Ignatius High School graduate’s skills as diagnostician, teacher, and psychotherapist were well known. Fr. Murray entered the Society of Jesus in 1953, in Milford, Ohio, was ordained in 1965 at Colombiere College in Clarkston, Mich., and took his final vows in 1976. He received certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1978. He passed away in Weston, Mass.

Motivator, recruiter, and trainer
A consistent supporter of the University, Richard Olivier ’57, founding partner and director of Garland Industries, helped transform a small manufacturing company into a $300-million, employee-owned organization with subsidiaries in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Olivier was involved in the management of the business until the time of his death on Oct. 12, 2013. The Lakewood, Ohio, native worked summers for the railroad and on ore boats to pay his way through John Carroll. The annual fund chair (2002) served his ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the Army, training and motivating more than 40 young men. Olivier and his wife, Wanda Dabbelt, who he was married to for 53 years, raised five children. The St. Edward High School graduate enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.
