CLASS OF 2019 LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS
Matthew Bocketti is from Northville, Michigan, planning to major in Finance. In high school, he was a member of student government, a leader on the Kairos religious retreat, and a member of his high school’s varsity baseball team. He also volunteered for several relay for life events, vacation bible school, and an outreach program to help feed the hungry in Detroit.
Luke Cancilla is an Exercise Science major from Erie, Pennsylvania. In high school, he was the President of National Honors Society and participated in a variety of service work, including a week-long mission trip. Luke ran cross country and track, and played basketball during high school. He is currently a member of the JCU cross country and track teams.
Zach Chapman is a Business Economics Major from Toledo, Ohio. In high school, he was a band member, retreat leader, debate team member, member of the Campion players’ drama club and a member of both the NHS and Spanish NHS. He is an Eagle Scout and a coffee barista. At JCU he will be a member of the honors program and the pep band.
Alejandro Charette is from Centerville, Ohio. In high school, he played football and wrested for three years. Alejandro will continue playing football for John Carroll.
Nick Colby is a Cellular and Molecular Biology major from Russia, Ohio. In high school, he was a member of the National Honors Society, the Science Olympiad team, and member of the varsity Bowling and Track teams. In his community, he was a president of his local 4-H club, a member of his church choir, and an executive member of the Shelby County Junior Fair Board. He plans on continuing his Track and Field career at John Carroll.
Emily Ellis is a Biochemistry major from Canfield, Ohio. In high school, she was a two-sport varsity letterman and captain in basketball and tennis. Emily was also a member of the Interact Club, Y-Teens and Young Leaders, Leo’s Club, and Key Club in high school. Following college, Emily plans to attend medical school.
Elizabeth Evankovich is a Business major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In high school, she was involved in activities including National Honor Society, Key Club, SADD, Musicals, Campus Ministry, and Choir. She is looking forward to continuing her passions for music and volunteering at JCU.
Nate Fuller is a Business Major from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He plans on becoming active in what TV, radio, or other broadcast clubs the university has to offer as well as volunteering his time to bettering the John Carroll Community. In high school, he was an Eagle Scout and an advisor to his school’s multi-media club.
Marissa Golem is a Chemistry major from Parma, Ohio. In high school, she played varsity soccer and served as a Kairos team leader, Eucharistic minister, reach out leader and retreat leader for peer ministry. Marissa was also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Leadership Council and volunteered at a nursing home, food pantry and Bible school. Marissa plays soccer for the JCU Women’s Soccer team and plans to participate in Campus Ministry and Student Union.
Jacob Haas is a Computer Science major with a minor in Business from Westlake, Ohio. In High school, he played varsity soccer, football, and ran track. Jacob enjoyed volunteering at battered women’s shelters as well as creating new programs and scripts on his laptop. He hopes to participate in club sports as well as get a part-time job with the tech. support team at John Carroll.
Devvin La Barge is a Biochemistry major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has been involved in basketball, the National Honor Society, children with special needs, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, orchestra and track. She will be continuing her basketball career for the Lady Blue Streaks. After graduation, Devvin plans to attain her Master’s Degree in Physician’s Assistant.
Kristina Lustri is a Biology major from Waite Hill, Ohio. In high school, she participated in cheerleading, marching band, and concert band. Kristina was also a member of National Honor Society and served as a member of Student Council, Key Club, Spanish Club, Class Secretary, and Editor In Chief of her high school’s 2015 yearbook. She represented her school as an ambassador to HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership) and Leadership Lake County.
Katie O’Connell is a Communications major from LaGrange, Illinois. In high school, she participated in choir and theatre and was the student director for her schools Operation Snowball program. She was also involved in her church’s youth group, started a local clothing drive for Genesys Works, and volunteered to coach her middle school cheerleading team. She hopes to continue her involvement with ministry and volunteering at John Carroll.
Nicholas Reis is a Marketing major and Sports Studies minor from Newton, Illinois. In high school, he was involved in football, baseball, track, Spanish Club, Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 4-H, Lettermen Club, and volunteered with Miracle League. Nick will be a member of the John Carroll football team this fall.
Connor Robinson is an undecided major from Mentor, Ohio. In high school, Connor had five varsity letters in football, baseball, and track and will continue to play football at John Carroll. In addition to athletics, Connor was also the student body president for his high school and was involved in campus ministry. He plans to continue his involvement in campus ministry at John Carroll.
Jerry Rostocil is a Criminology major from Eastlake, Ohio. He will be working with the football team this fall as the Football Student Manager. In high school he was a core member of spiritual life, helped out with meal ministry, and worked closely with the student government committee. Also, he served as a Eucharistic minister and was a leader for the boys Kairos retreat.
Julia Ruggiero is a Marketing Major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In High School, Julia participated in various clubs and activities and was a student ambassador. She was also the co-founder, treasurer, and social events planner of the Oakland Catholic Science Club. She plans to get involved in clubs at JCU surrounding her interests, including service activities.
Amanda Smigel is a Psychology major with a Biology minor from Kent, Ohio. Throughout high school, she was an officer for NHS, a freshman mentor, a member of the Leadership Retreat Planning Committee, on the softball team, and was involved in choir and the drama guild. At JCU, she will also be a member of the honors program.
Haley Vinborg is a Marketing major from Mentor, Ohio. During high school, she was involved with multiple leadership roles, including serving as the captain for the varsity soccer and track teams, a student ambassador for the marketing program, and a leader of the anti-bullying program at Mentor. Haley will be a member of the women’s soccer team and hopes to get involved in service projects around the Cleveland area.
