Data We Backup: Your H:\ & O:\ Drives & Your Roaming Profile

Information Technology Services routinely performs backups of your data stored on our network drives. That includes your H:\ drive (generally your My Documents folder), your department O:\ drive, and your roaming profile (your personal settings for Windows and your applications). We perform two types of backups, tape backups and snapshots.

You are responsible for backing up any of your data not stored on your H:\ drive and O:\ drive. Storing documents and applications on your desktop is included in your H:\ drive backups.

Snapshots take a picture of your network data without taking the network drive offline. This backup is stored on another disk drive.

Tape backups are a more involved and lengthy process and thus are more labor intensive to restore. They are done offline and are created primarily for emergencies and disaster recovery occasions.

The ITS backup schedule follows:

Tape backup (typically performed between midnight and 8 a.m.):

  • Nightly backups (Monday-Saturday) are retained for four weeks.
  • Weekly backups (second, third, fourth, fifth Sundays) are retained for 16 weeks.
  • Monthly backups (first Sunday of the month) are retained for 64 weeks.

Filer/Disk snapshots (all nightly and weekly snapshots occur at midnight). The following times are dynamic, subject to change without notice:

  • DEPT volume (O:\ drive): two weekly, six nightly, and six hourly snapshots retained. Hourly snapshots taken at noon.
  • FSAHOME volume (H:\ drive): two weekly, six nightly, and six hourly snapshots retained. Hourly snapshots taken at noon.
  • FSAPROFILES volume: one weekly, six nightly, and six hourly snapshots retained. Hourly snapshots taken at noon.
  • STUHOME volume (H:\ drive): two weekly, six nightly, and six hourly snapshots retained. Hourly snapshots taken at noon.
  • STUPROFILES volume: one weekly, six nightly, and six hourly snapshots retained. Hourly snapshots taken at noon.

Note:
Any document created and deleted between snapshots or nightly backups will not be recoverable. Also, any document not on a snapshot and created and deleted since the last nightly backup will not be recoverable.
