John Carroll University is in the beautiful, safe “Heights” area located just 10 miles east of Cleveland, Ohio. This area of Greater Cleveland includes the cities of University Heights (John Carroll is the city’s namesake), Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, South Euclid, and Beachwood.

University Heights was originally named Idlewood Village at the turn of the century, but became University Heights in 1925 when John Carroll University, previously named St. Ignatius College, moved from the near West Side of Cleveland to its present location.

John Carroll University is a prestigious, intellectual community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Ongoing University events are open to local residents include: VITA tax program, tickets to football games, campus events, lectures on campus, plus other cultural, educational, and athletic events like the annual community Memorial Day parade, which ends on campus. Each fall, the University offers “Community Day” where local residents and city officials are invited to athletic events like soccer and football and the Homecoming “Street Fair.”

The university’s students, faculty and staff, provide more than 37,000 hours annually of community service (through Center for Service and Social Action) and provide other much-needed services like student teaching and volunteer programs within the local school systems and community agencies.

University Heights scores high marks for ease of shopping and the variety of stores and services offered. However, it is the rich diversity of people that distinguishes the community with its distinctive character. Houses of worship, representing all major religious denominations, are located in the Heights or nearby.
