Title IX is part of  the 1972 re-authorization of the Higher Education Act and stipulates that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” Title IX requires all schools receiving federal financial assistance to take reasonable steps to create a safe, nondiscriminatory learning environment.  If discrimination based on sex occurs, John Carroll University will take immediate action to end the discrimination, remedy its effects, and prevent its future recurrence.

Students, faculty and staff may review the following policies and procedures to help determine if a Title IX concern is in issue: Interpersonal Violence Policy  and/or the Sexual Harassment Policy.

Kendra Svilar, J.D. serves as the Title IX Coordinator for John Carroll University. She ensures that all campus constituencies receive appropriate training and reviews all Title IX allegations. Any concerns about possible violations of Title IX, which include all allegations of sexual discrimination in the educational arena including but not limited to sexual harassment and sexual assault, should be reported to the Title IX Coordinator.  She can be reached by email at ksvilar@jcu.edu or by phone at 216.397.6630.
