AJCU Honors Conference: March 1-2, 2019

John Carroll University

University Heights, Ohio

Joy from Truth

The Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, care for the whole person, is often discussed as an antidote to emphasizing the head over the heart. Properly understood, however, care for the whole person involves rejecting the dualism that pits reason against emotion. We affirm the cognate idea, gaudium de veritate, joy from truth, as the guiding principle of this year’s conference. Joy is a deeply embodied emotion that is inextricably tied to the quest for truth. Our keynote speaker, Kevin FitzGerald, S.J., molecular geneticist, bioethicist, and Jesuit priest from Georgetown University, exemplifies the unity our conference seeks in his commitment to integrating reason, faith, and justice. Join us for a joyful celebration of the life of the mind as a core principle of Jesuit honors programs.
