Student Activities

  • Hours and Wages – 20 hours per week in exchange for tuition and fees (excluding graduation fee) up to 9 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters (a total of 18 credit hours) and a stipend paid twice per month (September-May).
  • Qualifications – Full-time, matriculated, degree-seeking graduate student at JCU. Leading candidates will demonstrate a sincere interest in working with student activities in the field of student affairs.  Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to relate effectively with all members of the campus community are necessary.  The successful candidate must begin work on the Monday before classes begin in the fall and continues through the last day of finals in the fall semester and the Friday before Commencement in the spring semester.  Hours worked before classes begin and after the last day of classes will be deducted during office hours during the semesters and will need to be pre-approved by the Director of Student Activities.  A minimum twenty hours of work is expected each week.  Office hours must be approved by the Director of Student Activities and posted outside of the office.
  • Responsibilities
    Working primarily with the director of student activities, the main responsibilities of the graduate assistant are to assist in the management and administration of programs and services under the auspices of the Office of Student Activities, in order to promote a vibrant, engaging and active campus life.  Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning and promoting Late Night Programming on and off campus, planning the annual iLead program, and other student organization leadership training initiatives, managing registered and petitioning student organizations, advising the Relay For Life leadership team and assisting in event coordination.
    Primary Responsibilities include:
    Late Night Programming

    • Plan and implement Late Night Programming initiatives as requested by the director and/or the Late Night at Carroll (LNC) planning team.  Plan and attend at least 2 – 3 late night programs per month.
    • Recruit, develop and advise the Late Night at Carroll student programming group.
    • Promote the LNC schedule of events as needed to the community.
    • Attend the Late Night at Carroll sponsored events as needed.

    Student Organizations

    • Maintain database of petitioning and registered student organizations, and send weekly database updates to offices that provide services for organizations.
    • Work with the director and Student Organization Review Board on the organization recognition process, make sure proper paperwork and constitutions are on file, and make adjustments to necessary websites or other documents with listings of organizations and budget codes.
    • Supervise officer transition process every winter, including communicating with groups and advisors.
    • Provide administrative support for organization policy development/enforcement.
    • Work with the director to supervise online organization management system, including offering trainings for new organization leaders, tracking officer changes, and reviewing website content and events.

    Leadership Development

    • Plan all logistical elements of the annual iLead program, including catering, audio-visual, facility reservations and set-up, invitations to guest presenters, registration, and assessment.
    • Lead discussion with OSA and divisional staff to develop themes, general sessions, and breakout session topic areas for the Transition Weekend.
    • Develop and implement other leadership initiatives as assigned by director.


    • Develop and distribute monthly department e-newsletter/calendar.
    • Assist in marketing events and activities of department and student organizations (Org Sync).

    American Cancer Society Relay For Life

    • Advise the Relay For Life Event Director and full leadership team
    • Attend leadership team and manager meetings as often as possible.
    • Attend state collegiate summit and winter training with members from leadership team.
    • Serve as liaison with American Cancer Society Staff Partner.
    • Communicate with university administrators and external entities when necessary, particularly related to production elements, scheduling, public relations, etc.
    • Assist with coordination of event.

    Other Office/Planning Duties

    • Coordinate the fine arts programming event schedule funded by the Kulas Grant (usually one event per month).

    Student Activities Staff

    • Attend weekly staff meetings as well as one-on-one meetings with the director.
    • Attend large campus-wide events sponsored by the OSA, as needed, such as: Student Involvement Fair, Homecoming, Christmas Carroll Evening, Winter Formal, Greek Week, Spring Concert, Senior Celebration, and Late Night at Carroll events.
    • Maintain notes, electronic files and folders, and instructions for the various areas of responsibility/tasks.
    • Work on any other initiatives as assigned by the director of student activities.
