SUBJECT: Chief Diversity Officer Search
Dear Members of the John Carroll University Community,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Terry L. Mills as our first Assistant Provost for Diversity.
Dr. Mills has been at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, for the past seven years, first as Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and currently as Dean of Research and Sponsored Programs, as well as Professor of Sociology.
Earlier Dr. Mills served at the University of Florida, most recently as Associate Dean for Minority Affairs and Director of the Office for Academic Support and Institutional Services in addition to his role as a faculty member in the Sociology department. Dr. Mills developed or supervised programs to strengthen minority outreach, support ethnic minority and first-generation students, and enhance the awareness and appreciation of diversity among students, faculty, and staff.
At both Morehouse College and the University of Florida, Dr. Mills taught courses in the Sociology of Aging and Organizational Sociology and published dozens of refereed journal articles and book chapters. He has often been named to national professional boards and committees and has received numerous awards and individual and institutional grants to support his work, including grants for an Upward Bound Program and the R.E. McNair Scholars Program. An active university citizen, Dr. Mills has been a mentor and advisor to students and colleagues alike.
As a campus community we can celebrate the progress we are making by attracting a very experienced professional to help us achieve our campus culture goals.
I would like to thank the members of the Assistant Provost Search Committee: Dr. Yuh-Cherng Chai, Dr. Penny Harris, Dr. Sheila McGinn, and Dr. Rosanna Miguel, Dr. Mark McCarthy, Eric Patterson, George Sample, ’02, David Wong, and especially its Chair, Dr. Graciela Lacueva, for seeing this important search through to successful conclusion.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Mills to campus when he starts on August 18, 2014.
Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J.
