Building Student Success in Problem Solving–Using a Strategy Approach for Teachers of Grades 3 – 8
Do your students struggle with solving problems? Do they lack the tools to get started and consistently depend on your help to figure out what to do?
Join other upper elementary and middle school teachers to learn and use problem solving strategies that you can then model with your students to lead them on a successful path in solving problems.
By attending this workshop you will:
- use specific problem solving strategies to solve non-routine problems and learn to model the strategies for your students;
- develop rubrics to assess student achievement on rich problems;
- receive an extensive resource for grade level appropriate tasks that have been aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (Ohio’s New Learning Standards);
and your students will:
- learn and apply strategies to successfully solve non-routine problems and rich mathematical tasks;
- improve their achievement in mathematics as a result of specific instruction and modeling of problem solving strategies.
- learn to approach problem solving tasks on the OAA and PARCC assessments.

- Attend a 4-day workshop at John Carroll University from July 21 – 24, 2014.
- Receive a copy of What’s Your Math Problem?
- Receive Paths to Problem Solving materials for your grade level.
Cost: The cost for the 4 days and materials is $350 per person. Early registration is encouraged.
Non-degree graduate credit (optional): 2 credit hours @ $160 per hour (total: $320). More information on graduate credit will be offered on the first day of the course.
