2013-14 Shula Lecture series: Bodies and Sexualities
The 2013-2014 Shula Lecture Series, “Bodies and Sexualities,” presents “Guyland: The American Campus in the 21st Century” with Dr. Michael Kimmel, Department of Sociology at Stony Brook University. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 7 p.m. in Donahue Auditorium in the Dolan Science Center. This event is free and open to the public. Dr. Kimmel is nationally recognized for his work in the areas of gender and sexuality studies and his presentation is based on his book Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2008). His books include: Changing Men (1987), Men Confront Pornography (1990), Men’s Lives (9th edition, 2012), Against the Tide: Profeminist Men in the United States, 1776 – 1990 (1992), The Politics of Manhood (1996), Manhood: A Cultural History (1996), and The Gendered Society (5th edition, 2013). The new book is Angry White Men.
Dr. Kimmel will also meet with John Carroll discussion group participants on April 9th at 3 p.m. in the Reading Room of the Dolan Science Center for a question and answer period.
Dr. Kimmel’s visit is being co-sponsored by the Shula Chair in Philosophy, the Office of the Provost and AVP, the Program in Applied Ethics, the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, and the Department of Sociology and Criminology. His public lecture is part of the 2013-14 Shula Lecture Series: Bodies and Sexualities and will take place during A Celebration of Scholarship!
