Staff members from John Carroll University’s student-run newspaper have earned nine Region 4 Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, including second place in the “Best All-Around Non Daily Student Newspaper” category among similarly sized institutions.
Carroll News staffers took the top three honors for general column writing. Managing editor Brian Bayer ’13, a communication and theatre arts major and Spanish minor, placed first and advanced to the national Mark of Excellence Awards competition. Staff columnist Clara Richter ’14 and editor-in-chief Dan Cooney ’13 won second and third place, respectively, in the category.
JCU students also earned second- and third-place awards for: general news writing, feature writing, in-depth reporting, and sports writing. A complete list of Region 4 winners is available on the Society of Professional Journalists website.
Published since 1925, The Carroll News provides opportunities for JCU students of all majors to gain experience in reporting, editing, photojournalism, web design, advertising, and sales and marketing.
