The February 2012 issue of Connections, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities online newsletter, features an essay by Edward P. Hahnenberg, Ph.D., the inaugural Jack and Mary Jane Breen Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology at John Carroll University. The essay is titled “Systematic Theology at a Catholic University.”

“By its very nature, the discipline of systematic theology brings into dialogue religious tradition and contemporary experience,” Hahnenberg writes in the essay. “It creates conversation between the wisdom of the past and the challenges of the present. And, like any genuine conversation, the dialogue is mutual—open to the ways the tradition illuminates and challenges our experience, and open to the ways our experience illuminates and challenges the tradition.”

Hahnenberg joined John Carroll’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies in fall 2011. The Chair in Catholic Systematic Theology was established by JCU alumni Jack ’56 and Mary Jane ’91, ’94G Breen to support John Carroll University’s mission and enhance educational endeavors centering on the University’s Jesuit Catholic tradition.
